John Anderson, the legendary referee recognised for his iconic voice for 1990s and 2000s gameshow Gladiators, has passed away at the age of 92. The news was confirmed by the official Gladiators Instagram account. According to Athletics Weekly, Anderson died in the early hours of Sunday, 28th July.
Anderson became a household name as the chief official on Gladiators, which aired on ITV from 1992 to 2008. His distinctive voice and memorable catchphrase, “Contender, ready! Gladiator, ready! Three… two… one…” became synonymous with the show, which featured contestants facing off against a team of physically skilled ‘gladiators.’ Anderson also officiated a brief revival of the show on Sky in 2008 and witnessed its successful return to the BBC earlier this year.
The BBC Gladiators account expressed their condolences, said, “We send our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.” Mark Clattenburg, the head official on the BBC reboot of the series, shared a tribute on social media, wrote, “RIP Legend,” alongside a note from the official Gladiators account mourning Anderson’s death.
Beyond his television career, Anderson made significant contributions to athletics. He served as head coach for the Amateur Athletics Association of England and as the Scottish national coach. Among the athletes he worked with were Scottish Olympic runner Liz McColgan, who won silver in the 10,000 meters at the 1988 Olympics, and former 5,000 meters world record holder David Moorcroft.
