The “Star Trek” universe is about to add a new dimension of humour with a forthcoming live-action-comedy series, led by actor-writer Tawny Newsome and writer-director Justin Simien.

The series will be set in the 25th century and revolves around “Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet” who discover that their everyday activities are being broadcast throughout the quadrant, according to Variety report.

Newsome and Simien, along with fellow executive producer Alex Kurtzman, launched the project during the “Star Trek” Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Simien moderated the panel, while Newsome joined the cast of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” to discuss the fifth and final season of the animated series, where she voices Beckett Mariner, a junior officer on the USS Cerritos.

The new series will see Simien, Newsome, and Kurtzman collaborating on the writing. Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will also serve as executive producers. While Newsome did not confirm her involvement in front of the camera, she has previously worked as a writer on the upcoming “Star Trek” series, “Starfleet Academy,” and appeared as Mariner in a live-action crossover with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Her other acting credits include “Physical,” “Space Force,” and “Brockmire.”

This new project marks Simien’s second TV series, following Netflix’s “Dear White People,” based on his 2014 film of the same name. He also directed the 2023 horror comedy “Haunted Mansion” for Disney and wrote and directed the 2020 film “Bad Hair.”
