Aquaman director James Wan is all set to be back with his next feature film—a remake of the classic horror movie “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” The film is in the early stages of development and Wan is in discussions to direct the project for Universal Pictures.
The new film is being described as a “grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.” It’s been 70 years since “Creature From the Black Lagoon” first terrified audiences in the 1954 film directed by Jack Arnold, which starred Richard Carlson and Julia Adams. Over the decades, several filmmakers, including Guillermo del Toro, have attempted to reboot the iconic black-and-white monster movie, but none have successfully brought the project to fruition.
This remake marks Universal’s latest effort to tap into its extensive library of classic monsters. The studio’s previous attempt to create a shared monster universe—dubbed the “Dark Universe”—collapsed after the failure of Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy” at the box office. Since then, Universal has shifted its focus to standalone films rather than an interconnected universe. The results have been mixed: the studio saw success with 2020’s “The Invisible Man,” starring Elisabeth Moss, which earned $143 million worldwide on a modest $7 million budget, while “Renfield,” featuring Nicholas Hoult as Dracula’s deranged assistant, flopped with just $26 million globally. Currently, a remake of “Wolf Man” starring Christopher Abbott is also in development.
Michael Clear and Judson Scott from Wan’s Atomic Monster production company will serve as executive producers for the “Creature From the Black Lagoon” remake. Universal’s ex
