The trailer launch event for docu-series “Angry Young Men,”—which documents the legendary partnership of screenwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar—was an evening filled with nostalgia, humor, and heartwarming moments. The Tuesday event saw the duo joined by Salman Khan, Farhan Akhtar, and Zoya Akhtar on stage.
In a light-hearted moment that set the tone for the evening, Salman Khan added his unique twist to one of the most iconic dialogues penned by his father and Javed Akhtar. “Mere paas maa hain (I have mothers),” said Salman adding, “Aur voh bhi do (And the number is two),” referencing his mother Salma Khan and stepmother Helen. The joke drew smiles from Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar and had the audience in laughter.
Javed Akhtar shared anecdotes from Salman Khan’s early days, recalling the first time he visited Salim Khan’s Bandra residence. “Salman was not even one year old…He was an exceptionally good-looking child,” remembered Akhtar adding how Salman has always been handsome, even as a child. He also described Salman as a “shy boy” who “would quietly sit in a corner,” in stark contrast to the superstar’s current image as Bollywood’s “He-Man.”
The docu-series “Angry Young Men,” produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Media & Entertainment, and Tiger Baby, delves into the remarkable journey of Salim-Javed, the screenwriting duo responsible for some of Bollywood’s most iconic films of the 1970s. Directed by Namrata Rao, the series promises an intimate look at their lives, legacy, and the indelible mark they left on Indian cinema.
Reflecting on the docu-series, Salman Khan expressed his admiration for the duo’s partnership, saying, “Growing up, it was really amazing to see my father and Javed Sahab working together in films. His passion for cinema changed the idea of heroism for an entire generation.” Farhan Akhtar added, “Their journey was full of determination, passion, and a strong desire to change the way Hindi cinema was viewed.”
Salman Khan further added, “Angry Young Men is a tribute to his amazing creativity and his profound impact on engine cinema. It is a close look at the lives of two superstar writers who changed the way storytelling forever. This series is special for both the families.”
During the trailer launch Zoya Akhtar said, “Angry Young Men” is the story of two men who created a character that defined Hindi cinema in the 70s. This is the story of Salim-Javed’s tremendous journey from small town to silver screen, and how they channeled their hardships, heartbreak, and their swag into their films.”
Farhan Akhtar said, “I remember everyone used to call my father and Salim uncle as Salim-Javed, as if they were the same person; their names were never mentioned separately, but always together. His journey was full of determination, passion and a strong desire to change the way Hindi cinema was viewed and he left an indelible mark that continues to inspire generations.”
“Angry Young Men” is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 20th August, and will be available in over 240 countries and territories. The series promises to be a fitting tribute to the creative genius of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, whose work continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
