Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has successfully defended her seat in the state Democratic primary, overcoming a challenge from Don Samuels in a rematch that revisited their tight contest from two years ago. According to the Associated Press, with nearly all precincts reporting, Omar led Samuels 56.2% to 42.9%.
Speaking to supporters in Minneapolis on Tuesday evening, Omar reflected on the essence of her campaign: “We run the politics of joy,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to advocating for housing, healthcare, and a peaceful, equitable world. Omar’s victory stands out as she faced a less intense battle compared to fellow members of the progressive “Squad,” who have been criticized for their positions on Israel’s war in Gaza.
Omar, who made history in 2019 as the first woman of color to represent Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives, is a prominent figure on the left wing of the Democratic Party. She serves as the deputy chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and supports key progressive policies like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. Her outspoken criticism of Israel has made her a polarizing figure, but this time, pro-Israel groups, including the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), largely stayed out of the Minnesota race.
Samuels, a former Minneapolis city councilman, expressed disappointment with the outcome, noting the impact of financial resources in the campaign. “Clearly money matters a little more in politics than I had hoped,” he said.
Despite being a target for criticism, particularly regarding her comments on U.S. support for Israel, Omar maintained strong support in her district. Internal polling indicated a significant lead over Samuels, which was confirmed by the primary results.
Omar’s victory marks a significant moment for the progressive movement within the Democratic Party, especially as other Squad members, such as Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, recently faced defeats in their primaries. The lack of heavy opposition from pro-Israel groups in Omar’s race suggests that factors beyond her stance on Israel played a role in the primary outcomes across different states.
As Omar now heads into the general election in Minnesota’s solidly Democratic 5th District, she continues to stand as a prominent voice for progressive values, reaffirmed by her successful campaign and support from key figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Vice President Kamala Harris.
