Legendary Television has secured the rights to Anna Dorn’s novel Perfume & Pain, with Clea DuVall attached to write and direct the adaptation. The news, which reported exclusively by Variety, marks an exciting collaboration between Dorn and DuVall, both of whom have established themselves as creative forces in their respective fields.

Perfume & Pain is described as a “sexy and twisted character drama,” centering on Astrid, a sapphic novelist teetering on the edge of superstardom and self-destruction. As she battles her inner demons and navigates the treacherous waters of fame, Astrid must find a way to save herself from the vices that threaten to destroy her. The novel explores themes of love, addiction, and the creative process, promising a gripping narrative that blends passion with peril.

The novel, published by Simon & Schuster in the US on 21st May 21 has already garnered attention for its bold and raw storytelling. Dorn, whose previous works include Exalted, Bad Lawyer, and Vagablonde, continues to make waves in the literary world. Her next novel, American Spirits, is also set to be published by Simon & Ssham chuster. Dorn is represented by Gersh and Sanford J. Greenburger Associates for her publishing ventures.

DuVall, a multi-talented actress, writer, director, and producer, will bring her unique vision to the project. She made her directorial debut with the indie comedy The Intervention, which she also wrote, co-produced, and starred in alongside Natasha Lyonne and Jason Ritter. The film won the special jury prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, establishing DuVall as a filmmaker to watch. More recently, she co-created the Fox animated series HouseBroken, serving as an executive producer and voice actor. Her other notable credits include the Amazon Freevee series High School and the popular romantic comedy Happiest Season. DuVall is represented by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.

Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, the powerhouse duo behind Killer Films, will produce Perfume & Pain. Since founding Killer Films in 1995, Vachon and Koffler have produced an impressive array of critically acclaimed films, including Kids, Boys Don’t Cry, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and One Hour Photo. Their recent projects include May December, Past Lives, and the acclaimed series Mildred Pierce and Halston.

With Perfume & Pain, Dorn’s evocative narrative and DuVall’s cinematic talent are set to converge in a project that promises to be as compelling as it is daring. Fans of both the novel and DuVall’s work can look forward to a gripping and visually stunning adaptation.
