Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western project, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is set to hit the streaming service Max on Friday, 23rd August. This marks a new chapter for the film after its challenging theatrical release.
Costner, who stars in, co-directed, co-wrote, produced, and co-financed the film, has created a sweeping saga that explores the lives of various characters in the American West during and after the Civil War. Originally envisioned as a series of four films, the future of the “Horizon” saga is now uncertain following the disappointing box office performance of the first installment.
Despite its hefty $100 million budget, the film only garnered $11 million during its opening weekend. In a bid to continue his vision, Costner invested $38 million of his own money into the project. The second chapter of the franchise was scheduled for an August 16 theatrical release but was pulled after the initial film’s underwhelming performance. Instead, “Horizon Chapter 2” will premiere out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival on September 7.
According to a New Line Cinema spokesperson who spoke to Variety, the decision to delay the second film’s release aims to “give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of ‘Horizon’ over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max.”
The star-studded cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Thomas Haden Church, adding depth to the Western epic.
The first installment was released on PVOD on July 16, shortly after its June 28 theatrical debut. Production on the third film in the series commenced in May, with Costner taking a break to promote the first movie. Filming for “Chapter 3” is expected to resume in August, with the script for the fourth and final film already in the hands of key crew members.
As “Horizon: An American Saga” moves to a digital audience, Costner remains hopeful that his vision for this epic Western tale will find its audience.
