Fans eager to see Michelle Yeoh in the Avatar universe will have to wait a bit longer as according to reports Michelle Yeoh will not be appearing in the third part of the franchise titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, clarified director James Cameron. Yeoh’s character, Dr. Karina Mogue will make her debut in the fourth and fifth instalment.

“Michelle Yeoh won’t be in 3. She’s in 4 and 5,” Cameron revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Disney’s D23 convention adding that “So that got a little bit misreported.”

This revelation comes after a 2021 post by the late producer Jon Landau, who shared a photo of Yeoh on the set of the third “Avatar” film, sparking speculation that her character would appear in Fire and Ash. Cameron, however, explained that although parts of “Avatar 4” were shot concurrently with 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” Yeoh’s character will be introduced later in the saga.

“She will be coming in soon to do her part, which is an interesting, fun character,” Cameron explained to EW. “I mean, we’re getting ahead of ourselves now. This whole thing has been planned for years and years. The scripts were all written years ago, through the end of movie 5. So we’ve been working on parts of 4 even as we go along, mostly because we’ve got this young cast. We had to shoot them all while they were still young,” added Cameron.

Expressing his enthusiasm for working with Yeoh, Cameron added, “We love Michelle. She was always a movie star, but she’s blown up into a huge, huge phenomenon. I look forward to working there.”

During the D23 expo on 9th August, Cameron, along with “Avatar” stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington, unveiled the official title of the third film in the franchise and shared some tantalizing concept art.

“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron teased the audience. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before.”

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” is slated to hit theaters on 19th December, 2025, with “Avatar 4” following on 21st December, 2029, and “Avatar 5” on 19th December, 2031.
