The creators of the upcoming film Maa Kaali have released a chilling video to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Direct Action Day, a significant yet often overlooked event in Indian history. Directed by Vijay Yelakanti and produced by People Media Factory, the film aims to bring to light the brutal massacres and communal violence that took place on 16th August, 1946, which have largely faded from public memory, particularly in Bengal.
Direct Action Day, which set the stage for the partition of India, was marked by widespread communal riots, mass conversions, and the loss of thousands of lives, all driven by the goal of establishing a separate religious state. The violence turned Calcutta into a battlefield, with subsequent mass killings in Noakhali leading to a massive refugee crisis. Many Hindus were displaced, losing their homes, families, and identities, with generations continuing to live as refugees in their own country.
The film Maa Kaali seeks to shine a light on this erased history, exploring the aftermath of the violence through the experiences of a Hindu Bengali family. The teaser will be released in Hindi, Bengali, and Telugu, offering a glimpse into the extreme measures taken by religious extremists during that period. Starring Raima Sen and Abhishek Singh, the film is produced by TG Vishwa.
