Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the first teaser for Pedro Almodóvar’s highly anticipated English-language debut, “The Room Next Door”. The film, which stars Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, is set to have its world premiere this month at the Venice Film Festival, followed by its US debut at the New York Film Festival. According to Sony, the film will open in New York and Los Angeles on 20th December, with a wider release in select cities on Christmas Day. A nationwide rollout is scheduled for January 2025.

“The Room NextDoor” tells the story of Ingrid, played by Moore, a best-selling author who reconnects with Martha, a war journalist portrayed by Swinton. As the two women delve into their shared past, Martha makes a request that challenges their renewed friendship. The film also features John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, and Juan Diego Botto in key roles.

Described as a powerful exploration of the “endless cruelty of war,” the film contrasts the distinct ways the two protagonists, both writers, engage with themes of reality, death, friendship, and sexual pleasure. These elements serve as their “best allies in the fight against horror,” according to the film’s description. The movie is further said to capture a “sweet awakening with the chirping of birds” in a secluded house within a nature reserve in New England, where the two friends navigate an “extreme and strangely sweet situation.”

Warner Bros. Pictures has secured the rights to distribute “The Room Next Door” in several key international markets, including Almodóvar’s native Spain. The studio will also handle the film’s release in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe (excluding Poland), Latin America, and parts of Asia-Pacific, including Japan.

Produced by Almodóvar’s El Deseo and filmed in Madrid and New York, “The Room Next Door” is the director’s first feature-length film since 2021’s “Parallel Mothers,” which also premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Penélope Cruz earned the Best Actress Volpi Cup for her performance.
