In a surprising development, actor Mohanlal has stepped down as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). The entire executive committee of the association also tendered their resignations on Tuesday.
This decision comes on the heels of actor Siddique’s resignation from the general secretary position amid allegations of sexual abuse. Jagadish was being considered for the role, but the unexpected mass resignation took precedence.
According to a statement released by AMMA, the executive committee was dissolved due to sexual abuse allegations reported in the media against some of its members. “In light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members, AMMA has decided to dissolve the executive committee taking moral responsibility. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement read.
The statement further expressed hope for a renewed leadership to take charge and strengthen the association. “We hope that a leadership that is capable of revamping and strengthening the association will take over soon. We are thankful everyone for pointing out our errors,” it said.
The now-dissolved executive committee included prominent actors like Jagadish, Jayan Cherthala, Baburaj, Kalabhavan Shajon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joy Mathew, Suresh Krishna, Tini Tom, Ananya, Vinu Mohan, Tovino Thomas, Sarayu, Ansiba, and Jomol.
