Studio Ghibli’s heart-wrenching animated masterpiece, “Grave of the Fireflies,” is set to debut on Netflix on 16th September. The film will be available in over 190 countries, with Japan as the sole exception. This exclusive release is part of Netflix’s ongoing strategy to expand its impressive collection of top-tier anime from Japan.

Netflix already offers 22 Studio Ghibli films to its global audience, excluding the US and Japan. The addition of “Suzume,” “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK,” and “Grave of the Fireflies” in 2024 will further enhance the platform’s anime offerings, providing more viewers the chance to explore Japan’s premier animation.

“Grave of the Fireflies,” based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s Naoki Prize-winning short story, is set in Kobe during the closing days of World War II. It tells the poignant story of war orphan siblings and the devastating impact of that era. The film is a creation of the legendary director Isao Takahata, who co-founded Studio Ghibli.

The film boasts an impressive creative team, led by Executive Producer Ryoichi Sato and Producer Toru Hara. The film was written and directed by the legendary Isao Takahata, based on the novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, published by Shinchosha. The evocative music was composed by Michio Mamiya, with Yoshifumi Kondo serving as both Character Designer and Animation Director. The layout was crafted by Yoshiyuki Momose, while Nizo Yamamoto took on the role of Art Director. The film’s distinct color design was created by Michiyo Yasuda, with Nobuo Koyama handling photography. Sound design was led by Yasuo Uragami, and the film was edited by Takeshi Seyama.

“Grave of the Fireflies” is scheduled to stream exclusively on Netflix starting 16th September.
