The teaser trailer for “Rumours” has dropped, offering a glimpse into Guy Maddin’s politically charged horror-comedy, starring Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and, intriguingly, an oversized brain. The film, distributed by Bleecker Street, is set to hit theaters on 18th October, perfectly timed for the lead-up to this November’s presidential election.
“Rumours,” which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, features a star-studded ensemble including Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Charles Dance, Takehiro Hira, Denis Ménochet, Rolando Ravello, and Zlatko Buric. The plot follows the leaders of the seven G7 nations as they gather for their annual summit, only to find themselves lost in the woods, struggling to draft a statement addressing a global crisis.
The trailer is deliberately cryptic, offering just a taste of the eerie atmosphere and the lurking terror that awaits the stranded politicians. Amid the fog and tension, one character breaks the suspense with a bewildered shout: “A giant brain!”
Maddin has both written and directed the film alongside his longtime collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson. The production team includes Liz Jarvis, Philipp Kreuzer, and Lars Knudsen, with Blanchett and Ari Aster serving as executive producers.
According to a review by The Hollywood Reporter, “Rumours operates on a surrealist plane of its own, making up the rules of its universe as it goes along.” Felperin further described the film as a series of loosely connected skits, culminating in a “terrific climactic closure, in which all the buzzwords and banalities get to be rolled up into one triumphant speech shouted into the void as the world burns.”
