Mark Tyrrell, a former Metropolitan Police officer who served in the same elite unit as notorious criminals David Carrick and Wayne Couzens, has been charged with 21 serious offences, including multiple counts of rape and sexual assault. The 55-year-old, once part of the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command, is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Tyrrell faces a range of allegations spanning six years, including two charges of rape and 15 counts of sexual assault. Additionally, he is charged with four counts of sexual assault by penetration, three counts of perverting the course of justice, and one count of misconduct in public office.
The charges stem from incidents involving a single female victim whom Tyrrell allegedly met through his duties as a police officer. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed that the alleged offences occurred between 2017 and 2023, during which time Tyrrell was still a serving officer. He retired in September 2023, amid the ongoing criminal investigation.
The misconduct in public office charge relates to Tyrrell’s alleged inappropriate relationship with the woman, whom he reportedly knew to be in a vulnerable position. The charges of perverting the course of justice involve accusations that Tyrrell deleted messages, pressured the woman to provide false statements, and lied during a police interview while under caution.
The parliamentary and diplomatic protection command, an elite unit within the Metropolitan Police, is responsible for guarding embassies and diplomatic buildings across London, as well as Parliament. Members of this unit are typically armed.
While Tyrrell served in the same unit as Couzens and Carrick, both of whom are serving life sentences for their heinous crimes, there is no evidence suggesting that Tyrrell knew either of them. Scotland Yard confirmed, “Tyrrell was a police constable attached to the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command before he retired on 8 September 2023. Tyrrell was arrested in April 2023, while he was a serving officer, as part of an investigation by the Met’s directorate of professional standards.”
