The UK and US have diverged in their approach to Israel’s war with Hamas, with the UK government suspending certain arms exports to Israel while the US remains steadfast in its support. On Monday, Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the suspension of 30 out of 350 UK arms export licenses to Israel, reported The Sky News. This move marked a significant break from the US, which continues to provide military support to Israel following the 7th October attacks.

Last week, US Vice President Kamala Harris reinforced the unwavering US stance, telling CNN, “Let me be very clear. I’m unequivocal and unwavering in my commitment to Israel’s defence and its ability to defend itself.”

On Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Matt Miller emphasized that the UK’s decision had no influence on US policy. “They came to this conclusion. We have reviews that are ongoing,” he said, adding that the UK remains a sovereign nation and the decision was theirs to make.

Meanwhile, the US has escalated its legal efforts against Hamas leaders, announcing criminal charges against several figures, including Yahya Sinwar, for their role in the 7 October attacks. While largely symbolic due to Sinwar’s believed hiding in Gaza and the deaths of some other leaders, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “These actions will not be our last.”

Amid continued violence, protests have raged in Tel Aviv for three consecutive nights, with many Israelis demanding a stronger government focus on securing the release of over 200 hostages taken during the 7 October attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced mounting criticism for his inability to bring the hostages home, with calls for accountability increasing.

Former defense officials Benny Gantz and Gabi Eisenkot have been vocal in their opposition, with Gantz saying, “Israel could return to the Philadelphi corridor if needed,” but emphasizing that the primary focus should be on rescuing the hostages.

The situation remains tense, with ceasefire negotiations stalling over Israel’s demand for control of the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border, while frustration with Netanyahu’s leadership continues to grow.
