Fox’s drama series “9-1-1: Lone Star,” to end with fifth season, as per the official announcement reported exclusively by Deadline. The final 12-episode season is set to kick off on 23rd September, with the series finale slated for early 2025.

This marks a significant moment for Fox, as “Lone Star” is the last drama series on the network produced by 20th Television, a studio that was once part of Fox’s corporate family before being sold to Disney in 2019. The departure of “Lone Star” follows in the footsteps of its parent series “9-1-1,” which ended its run on Fox last year after six seasons due to shifting economics in the TV industry. However, unlike “9-1-1,” “Lone Star” won’t be making the jump to ABC, though rumours suggest the possibility of another “9-1-1” spinoff set in Las Vegas.

“From the start, fans have followed the heroic and deeply moving stories of the men and women who make up Austin’s 126,” said Fox TV Network President Michael Thorn. “A huge thanks to one of the greatest creative teams in all of television—Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear—for creating one of the most action-packed dramas anywhere. Now in our final season of the show, we’re set to give it the high-stakes send-off it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable odds, and relatable personal struggles, thanks to our incomparable, stellar cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres,” it added.

According to reports, the decision to end “Lone Star” has been a long time coming, with much of the cast having anticipated the show’s conclusion after contract negotiations failed to yield a deal. Original cast member Sierra McClain has already left the series, and other actors began exploring new opportunities months ago.

While Fox reportedly reached out to 20th TV about extending the series, the financial challenges surrounding the show proved too significant to overcome. According to Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade, the cost of producing “9-1-1” and its spinoff series was no longer feasible. “The economics weren’t going to pan out for this show for us,” Wade said in reference to 9-1-1, when it moved to ABC in 2023.

The series was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear and was known for its gripping rescues and emotionally charged storylines, featuring dynamic cast including Gina Torres, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, and Julian Works.

Season 5 will see Captains Strand and Vega (Torres) lead their team through a high-stakes storyline involving a catastrophic train derailment that endangers lives, including their own.

Despite its cancellation, Lone Star has maintained its status as one of Fox’s top-rated dramas, consistently ranking in the top 10 among adults 18-49. Season 4 averaged 9.6 million total viewers across platforms, more than doubling its live broadcast numbers.
