Warner Bros. has dropped the much-anticipated trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Mickey 17, marking the director’s return to the big screen after his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite. Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” worker tasked with dangerous colonization missions on an icy planet.

In Ashton’s novel, when one version of Mickey dies, a new clone is created, retaining most of the previous Mickey’s memories, allowing the cycle to continue. The film adaptation promises to blend existential themes with a futuristic setting, much like Bong’s previous genre-bending works.

Alongside Pattinson, the cast include Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Bong, known for his visionary filmmaking, not only directs but also penned the script and is producing through his company Offscreen. He’s backed by additional producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B, as well as Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.

Mickey 17 was originally slated for a March 2024 release, but Warner Bros. has since pushed the film to 31st January, 2025. According to sources cited by Variety, the delay was necessary to secure an IMAX release window and allow additional production time due to setbacks caused by the Hollywood strikes and shifting production schedules.

This will be Bong’s first feature since his 2019 global sensation Parasite, a dark social satire that made history as the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Parasite also earned Bong accolades for Best Director, Original Screenplay, and International Feature, cementing his status as one of cinema’s most celebrated auteurs. Bong’s previous films, including Snowpiercer, Okja, and The Host, further showcased his ability to infuse genre films with thought-provoking narratives.
