BAFTA Cymru has announced its 2024 Special Awards recipients, with celebrated TV producer Julie Gardner, MBE, and actor Mark Lewis Jones set to receive two of the organization’s highest honors at this year’s awards ceremony on 20th October.

Gardner, former Head of Drama at BBC Wales and co-founder of production company Bad Wolf, will be awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Television accolade, recognizing her pivotal role in shaping both Welsh and global television. Gardner is best known for her work on iconic series like Doctor Who and Torchwood and her leadership in bringing productions such as Da Vinci’s Demons and I Hate Suzie to life. She also produced the ITVX drama The Winter King and recently launched Lady in the Lake on Apple TV.

“Being the recipient of this prestigious Welsh award means the world to me, diolch BAFTA,” said Gardner adding that “The skills, passion, commitment, and work ethic of people in Wales is unbeatable.”

Meanwhile, Mark Lewis Jones, whose illustrious 38-year career spans roles in global hits like The Crown and Gangs of London, as well as Welsh dramas Stella and Keeping Faith, will be honored with the Siân Phillips Award. This accolade is presented to a Welsh individual who has made significant contributions to film and television. Jones’ standout performances have earned him critical acclaim, with his recent work in the BBC drama Men Up, which is nominated for six BAFTA Cymru Awards this year, further solidifying his impact.

“I am delighted to be honoured with this award, diolch BAFTA Cymru,” said Jones. “I was born and bred in Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham… Arts and culture are the backbone of our society and an integral part of our nation’s identity,” he added.

Both Gardner and Jones join a distinguished list of past BAFTA Cymru honourees, including Russell T Davies, Michael Sheen, and Ruth Jones. Angharad Mair, BAFTA Cymru Chair, praised the recipients, stating, “These two awards go to individuals of the highest calibre… Wales is proving once again that we not only have amazing talent in Wales, but that we’re creating work of the highest quality.”

The BAFTA Cymru Awards will take place on 20th October, celebrating Welsh talent and achievements in television and film.
