Angelina Jolie’s powerful performance as legendary opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria is poised to make waves this fall awards season. According to Variety’s exclusive report, Netflix will release the film in US theaters on 27th November, with its streaming debut set for 11th December.
The streaming platform also shared a new image featuring Jolie in her transformative role as the iconic soprano. Maria received an eight-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with Jolie visibly moved, wiping away tears after the screening. Netflix secured the film after a competitive bidding war with another major distributor ahead of its festival debut.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, the biographical drama delves into the life of Maria Callas during her final days in Paris, following a career marked by both triumph and turbulence. The film reimagines her personal struggles as she grapples with her identity and enduring legacy.
Jolie’s portrayal of Callas has already received critical acclaim, with her performance being considered as a return to silver screen, who hasn’t been an Oscar contender since her 2008 nomination for Clint Eastwood’s Changeling. Her role in Maria is expected to place her among the frontrunners for Best Actress at the Oscars, potentially earning her a second Academy Award, following her 1999 win for Girl, Interrupted.
Part of Larraín’s trilogy of iconic women, Maria follows Jackie (2016), starring Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy, and Spencer (2021), featuring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana. Many are already calling Maria the strongest entry in this series, with a compelling screenplay penned by Oscar nominee Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things).
Produced by Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, Juan de Dios Larraín, and Lorenzo Mieli, Maria is also set to screen at the New York Film Festival on 29th September and the AFI Film Festival on 26th October.
