The Academy of Arts and Techniques of Cinema and CANAL+ have announced that legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve will preside over the 50th César Awards ceremony. The prestigious event will take place on Friday, 28th February, at the Olympia in Paris, celebrating five decades of excellence in French cinema.
Known for her remarkable career and timeless elegance, Deneuve is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. “Who better than an extraordinary actress to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Césars?” stated the announcement, highlighting her “exceptional talent, unique career, and timeless grace.”
Deneuve first rose to international fame with her role in Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. Since then, her ability to adapt to a wide range of cinematic styles has made her a constant presence on screen. Her extensive filmography includes iconic roles in Belle de Jour by Luis Buñuel, Repulsion by Roman Polanski, and The Last Metro by François Truffaut, which earned her a César for Best Actress in 1981.
Deneuve later won a second César for her performance in Indochine (1992), directed by Régis Wargnier, a film that also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Her collaborations with directors like André Téchiné, Nicole Garcia, and Lars Von Trier, as well as more recent works such as Bernadette by Léa Domenach, showcase the diversity of her roles and the breadth of her talent.
“Always modern and inspiring, Catherine Deneuve is also, beyond the screen, a woman of convictions, a committed artist,” said the Academy, praising her as a global icon of French elegance.
The 50th César Awards will be broadcast live and exclusively on CANAL+ on 28th February.
