Severe flash floods have submerged parts of the United Kingdom, with some areas experiencing a month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours. In London, a football pitch collapsed, and widespread flooding led to road closures, train suspensions, and homes being overwhelmed by water.
According to reports, parts of central and southern England were hit hardest, with 60 to 80 millimeters of rain falling on Monday. Some areas were forecast to see even more intense downpours, with totals exceeding 120 mm.
In London, the fire brigade was inundated with approximately 350 flood-related calls. The emergency service said, “These included rescuing people trapped in cars, assisting residents from flooded homes, and dealing with submerged underground stations and roadways.”
Among the most visible damage was at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium, where heavy rain left a gaping sinkhole in the pitch, forcing the postponement of Tuesday’s scheduled match.
The extreme weather has prompted authorities to issue warnings and advised residents to remain cautious as cleanup efforts begin.
