According to Deadline exclusive report, Netflix’s Virgin River is set to dive deeper into Mel’s backstory in the upcoming sixth season, focusing not only on her wedding to Jack but also on her parents. Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast as Mel’s late mother, Sarah, and biological father, Everett, who will appear in flashbacks throughout the season.

In an exciting first-look reveal, fans can now glimpse the duo as Sarah and Everett, whose love story unfolds in the early 1970s. The flashbacks will highlight Sarah, a free-spirited city girl with a passion for activism, and Everett, a musician with poetic dreams, as they navigate a whirlwind romance. Their characters are being introduced as Netflix explores expanding the Virgin River universe with a potential prequel series focused on Sarah and Everett’s origin story.

Set in 1972, Sarah is described as a witty, adventurous woman avoiding the traditional path expected of her in the ’70s. Everett, on the other hand, is a laid-back singer-songwriter living out of a VW Van until a fateful encounter with Sarah changes everything. The flashbacks will be interwoven with present-day storylines, revealing more about Everett, who was recently introduced as Mel’s biological father, portrayed by John Allen Nelson in the Season 5 Christmas special.

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith teased that Season 6 will dig into Everett’s complex history, said, “Who Everett Reid is, what his backstory is, what his connection to Virgin River was when he met her mom, and also what it is today—the relationship of Everett with the town as well as Everett and Mel.”

The official logline for Season 6 promises plenty of drama as it is set “against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season” promising fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles, delightful wedding drama as well as uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport the audience to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s.

The regular cast of the series includes Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, and Kandyse McClure. The series’ Season 6 directors are Martin Wood, Rama Rau, and Monika Mitchell, with scripts by Smith, Erin Cardillo, and others.
