Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler is reportedly in negotiations to headline HBO’s much-anticipated Lanterns series, an adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern, according Deadline’s exclusive report.

Though official comments have yet to be made, it’s believed Chandler is set to take on the iconic role of Hal Jordan, a character portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film. Lanterns will follow two Green Lanterns — the seasoned Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart — as they investigate a murder in middle America, leading them deep into an Earth-based mystery.

The series, helmed by Ozark creator Chris Mundy, alongside Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King, will be produced by HBO in partnership with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. With eight episodes planned, the project has been fast-tracked since its straight-to-series order in June.

Casting for John Stewart is still ongoing, but with Chandler potentially on board, the show is set to be one of the first major titles under DC Studios’ revamped vision.

“John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman,” said James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, during the series’ announcement.
