Prime Video has announced a major new project, ordering two seasons of Scarpetta, a mystery thriller series based on Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling book series. Oscar-winning stars Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis will headline the show, which will be produced by Blumhouse Television.

In the series, Kidman takes on the role of Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist returning to her former position as Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia, where she faces complex personal and professional challenges. Curtis plays her sister Dorothy, with simmering tensions and long-held secrets threatening to unravel their relationship.

Prime Video’s Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, praised the project, saying, “Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta has enraptured fans for decades… Liz Sarnoff’s vision for the series, paired with the extraordinary cast led by Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, makes this an exciting venture.”

The all-star cast also includes Bobby Cannavale as former detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose as Dorothy’s daughter Lucy Farinelli-Watson. The show will feature a mix of present-day and flashback sequences, with Rosy McEwen and Jake Cannavale portraying younger versions of Kay and Pete.

David Gordon Green will direct the first two episodes of the series, while Emmy-nominated Liz Sarnoff (Barry, Lost) serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Kidman, who has pursued the role of Kay Scarpetta for nearly two decades, expressed her excitement: “To unite with Jamie Lee Curtis, Prime Video, Jason Blum, and David Gordon Green on this thrilling series feels like it was meant to be.”

Curtis added, “I’ve wanted to bring Scarpetta to the screen for a while now. The fans of the books will be very happy, and the new audience will be captivated by the characters, crimes, and mysteries.”

Patricia Cornwell, who is also an executive producer on the project, celebrated the adaptation, stating, “I’m beyond excited that this is finally happening. This has been worth waiting for.”

Scarpetta is set to premiere on Prime Video in 240 countries, with distribution managed by Blumhouse and Amazon MGM Studios.
