American rapper Macklemore, known for his outspoken support of the Palestinian cause, has found himself in the middle of controversy after declaring “f*** America” during a pro-Palestine benefit concert in Seattle. The remark, made at the Palestine Will Live Forever event, overshadowed what the rapper described as a historic gathering aimed at raising awareness and funds for Palestinians, drawing widespread attention.
In a lengthy statement issued after the incident, Macklemore addressed the fallout, explaining that his frustration was directed at the US government’s continued financial support for Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He noted that the situation had taken an emotional toll on him over the past 11 months. “The last 11.5 months of watching a genocide unfold in front of us has been excruciating on a spiritual, emotional and human level,” Macklemore said in his statement. He further criticized the US for its role in enabling violence against Palestinians, said, “I am outraged by the fact that we lack money for healthcare, affordable housing and education in America yet we send billions to Israel to commit internationally recognised war crimes.”
Macklemore also emphasized that his words should not be misunderstood as hate for his country, but rather as a reflection of his disillusionment with the US political system and its support for Israel. “My ‘f***’ — my anger — is rooted not in disdain for where I was born, but in anguish for how we can collectively allow this to continue,” he explained, directing his frustration at politicians who prioritize “profit over people.”
Just days after his controversial remark, Macklemore was removed from the lineup of the inaugural Neon City Festival in Las Vegas. The festival’s organizers cited “unforeseen circumstances” but did not provide a direct reason for his exclusion.
Despite losing endorsements and business deals, Macklemore remains firm in his stance. “I’ve lost endorsements, I’ve lost business ties. I am still here, unwavering in my support for a Free Palestine,” he affirmed.
