Indian actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with India’s highest film honour Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, announced by the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X (formerly Twitter).

He wrote, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations. Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”

The 74-year-old actor will receive the award on 8th October 8 at the National Film Awards ceremony, said the minister. Chakraborty has a remarkable film career in both Hindi and Bengali cinema as a mainstream actor. His cinematic journey began with 1976 film Mrigayaa, which got him the National Film Award for Best Actor. In his long career span, he received two more National Film Awards for his roles in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). His recent work was Vivek Agnihotri’ The Kashmir Files.

Chakraborty, who is affectionately known as Mithun da not only gained success in commercial films but also has left his remark in art-house cinema, achieving box office success along with critical acclaim for his work. His unforgettable hits include Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni’, Ghar Ek Mandir and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki.

In recent years, he has widened his fanbase with shows like Disco Dancer and Dance Dance, where he appeared as judge on for dance competitions.

Besides his film work, Chakraborty also has a political career. Currently, he joined BJP in 2021, leaving his post of Trinamool Rajya Sabha member.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian honour earlier this year. Previous winners of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award include Amitabh Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman, Rekha, Asha Parekh, and Rajinikanth.
