Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is entering a new chapter as chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra prepares to step down, with Ravi Ahuja ready to take over the role beginning in 2025, according to The Hollywood Reporter report.
Ahuja, who was promoted to president and COO earlier this year, has been positioned as Vinciquerra’s successor to gain comprehensive experience within the company. Vinciquerra will remain involved as a non-executive chairman through 2025.
“It wasn’t so much of a decision, but a process, because we started this two and a half years ago when I signed my last agreement was that this would be the target, that we would get Ravi ready for the job and promote him in March, and then hand it over at the end of the year,” Vinciquerra told to The Hollywood Reporter. He noted that his initial intent was to temporarily lead the company to stabilize it following the challenges it faced, including the aftermath of the Sony hack in 2017, the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year’s Hollywood strikes.
Under Vinciquerra’s leadership, SPE made a strategic choice not to launch a broad-based streaming service, opting instead to distribute its films and TV shows to existing streaming platforms. This decision has proven beneficial as competitors like Paramount+, Warner Bros. Discovery, and NBCUniversal continue to struggle with the high costs of their streaming services. “If you run your business with common sense and focus on the important parts of what drive the business, you can be really successful… I think we’ve done that and put us in a pretty good place,” he said. Vinciquerra also acknowledged upcoming challenges in the industry: “I also think that the next couple of years are going to be rather difficult for the business… But at the end of that, the one thing we really know for sure is that the demand for content is not going down.”
Ahuja joined SPE in 2021, overseeing production for Sony Pictures Television and the company’s operations in India. He has also been instrumental in key acquisitions, including Industrial Media and the U.K. production company Bad Wolf. His previous experience includes serving as president of business operations and CFO at Walt Disney Television.
Ahuja will report directly to Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, and Hiroki Totoki, the company’s president, COO, and CFO.
SPE encompasses various film and TV studios under its umbrella, including renowned brands such as Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems, and franchises like Men in Black, Ghostbusters, and Spider-Man.
