A haunting new trailer for Robert Eggers’ upcoming gothic horror film Nosferatu has been released, showcasing a daunting performance by Lily-Rose Depp. In the footage, Depp’s character, overwhelmed by the dark allure of death, tearfully declares, “I’d never been so happy,” as shadowy figures of the iconic vampire lurk in the background, adding an air of suspense and terror.
Scheduled for release on 25th December, 2024, Nosferatu is Eggers’ retelling of the classic vampire tale, centering on the obsessive relationship between Depp’s character and the terrifying vampire, played by Bill Skarsgård. The unsettling romance spirals into a narrative of obsession and horror, promising to bring a fresh yet terrifying take on a story that has gripped audiences for decades.
Eggers, known for his work on The Lighthouse and The Northman, has assembled a remarkable cast alongside Depp and Skarsgård, including Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. Eggers is producing the film with Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus, Jeff Robinov, and John Graham. The project also reunites Eggers with Focus Features, following the success of his Viking epic The Northman, which grossed $70 million worldwide.
“I’m thrilled to bring this gothic tale to life,” Eggers said in earlier statements as reported by Deadline. Nosferatu stands as one of the most famous vampire stories in cinematic history, first brought to the screen in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, which remains a horror classic. Later adaptations, including Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) and E. Elias Merhige’s Shadow of the Vampire (2000), cemented the story’s enduring legacy. Dafoe, who stars in Eggers’ version, famously earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Max Schreck, the actor who played Count Orlok in Murnau’s original.
Besides Nosferatu, Focus Features is also rolling out a number of notable films, including Baltasar Kormákur’s romantic drama Touch, Sean Wang’s Sundance hit Dìdi, Pharrell Williams’ biopic Piece by Piece, and Edward Berger’s awards contender Conclave, set for release later this year.
