Timothée Chalamet has been spotted on the streets of Manhattan in costume as filming begins for his upcoming A24 film, “Marty Supreme,” centered on a professional table tennis player. In the photos from the set, Chalamet sports a vintage 1950s hairstyle, round wire-framed glasses, and an oversized white shirt layered beneath a blue sweater vest.
The film marks the first solo directorial effort of Josh Safdie since 2008. Joining Chalamet in the cast are Gwyneth Paltrow, making her first film appearance since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, and Tyler, the Creator, who is set to make his acting debut. Also featured in the film are Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller fame, “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), and acclaimed director Abel Ferrara. While specific plot details remain under wraps, A24 shared a teaser image of a ping pong ball with the words “coming soon” following the project’s announcement in July.
The original screenplay for “Marty Supreme” was crafted by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, who also serve as producers alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet, and A24. Chalamet is currently enjoying a successful run at the box office, having recently starred in “Wonka” and the sci-fi blockbuster “Dune: Part Two.” He has also just completed filming for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” where he portrays a young Bob Dylan in the early 1960s. This film, scheduled for release on December 25, chronicles Dylan’s rise in Greenwich Village and his groundbreaking performance with an electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, which transformed the music genre.
Josh Safdie is recognized for his work on critically acclaimed films like “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time,” which he co-directed with his brother Benny Safdie. Following their creative split, Josh directed Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix comedy special, “Love You,” and is also collaborating with Sandler on a new film focused on the world of sports memorabilia and baseball.
