Kirsten Dunst is set to team up with Channing Tatum in the upcoming true crime film Roofman, directed by Derek Cianfrance. The filmtells the fascinating story of Jeffrey Manchester, an eccentric serial robber famously dubbed the “Rooftop Robber.” Manchester broke into more than 60 McDonald’s restaurants by sneaking through their roofs, robbing them after locking staff in freezers.
After his 2000 conviction, Manchester made a daring escape from prison and spent months hiding in a Toys ‘R Us and Circuit City store in North Carolina. He lived off baby food and even exercised by riding bicycles in the toy store. His run ended when he left fingerprints on a Catch Me If You Can DVD, leading to his recapture. The film will focus on his time in hiding and the relationships he formed during his months on the run.
Dunst plays a struggling Toys ‘R Us employee, a single mother trying to make ends meet while raising her two daughters, Dee and Lindsay. Unbeknownst to her, Manchester had been secretly watching her from inside the store. When the two finally meet, she is drawn to his charm and they form a deep bond, though everything changes when she discovers his true identity.
The script was written by Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn, with Dylan Sellers and Chris Parker producing under their Limelight banner. Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell Taylor, longtime collaborators with Cianfrance, are also attached as producers.
FilmNation is handling international distribution for Roofman while CAA Media Finance is overseeing the domestic deals. Dunst’s powerful performance in Civil War has already placed her in the awards season conversation, and her role in Roofman is expected to further cement her reputation as one of Hollywood’s finest actors.
