Matthew Gray Gubler, known for his portrayal of Dr. Spencer Reid, is making his TV comeback as the lead in CBS’s upcoming crime procedural “Einstein,” the working title. This marks Gubler’s first major TV role since his Criminal Minds days and brings him back to the crime-solving world—this time with a comedic twist.
Einstein, produced by CBS Studios, is a collaboration between Monk creator Andy Breckman and executive producer/director Randy Zisk. The show, based on a German series of the same name, blends drama with humor, much like Monk.
In the series, Gubler steps into the shoes of Lew Einstein, a rebellious yet brilliant professor at Princeton who’s also the great-grandson of Albert Einstein. Lew’s life of mischief leads him into trouble with the law, forcing him to work with a local detective to crack difficult homicide cases. As a quirky genius whose infamous last name and talents weigh on him, solving murders might just be the purpose his aimless life needs.
Gubler’s character might share some intellectual DNA with Spencer Reid, as Lew is also a genius—though his scientific mind is less buttoned-up. “Irreverent and misguided, Lew’s genius and famous name weighs heavily on him, but using his gift to help solve homicides may — finally– offer his life some direction and purpose,” the description informed.
The pilot is written by Breckman, who is executive producing alongside Zisk, Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Laura Beetz for Seven One Studios International. Gubler himself is also on board as a producer.
For Criminal Minds fans, this could be the reunion they’ve been waiting for. Gubler was a series staple for all 15 seasons, with his unique blend of analytical skills and eccentric charm making him a fan favorite. Despite not returning for the 2022 revival Criminal Minds: Evolution, there’s hope his schedule might align better now, with both Einstein and Evolution under the CBS umbrella.
Before this, Gubler appeared in Hulu’s comedy Dollface and expanded his career into writing and illustrating children’s books, with his latest, The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand, released last year.
