Netflix has decided not to renew That ’90s Show for additional seasons, according to Deadline report. The cancellation was confirmed by actor Kurtwood Smith on Instagram, who mentioned that the series will be offered to other networks.
The announcement follows the release of the show’s third installment on 22nd August, marking the end of its two-season run. Netflix produces its multi-camera comedies in halves, known as “Parts,” and That ’90s Show was structured similarly, with the first season comprising ten episodes and a second season extended to 16 episodes divided into two parts.
According to reports, That ’90s Show struggled to make a significant impact. It only managed to break into the Netflix Top 10 once, garnering 1.8 million views in its initial week following its second part premiere on 27th June. The streaming service expedited the release of Part 3 by nearly two months, but it failed to chart, attracting fewer than 1.9 million viewers during its opening weekend and continuing to decline in subsequent weeks.
The show’s cancellation highlights the ongoing challenges Netflix and other streaming platforms face with original multi-camera comedies. Few series, such as Fuller House and The Ranch, have enjoyed a longer lifespan, and That ’90s Show aimed to follow in their footsteps by reintroducing beloved characters decades later. In this case, Smith and Debra Jo Rupp returned as Red and Kitty Forman, with a new younger cast joining them.
In his farewell message, Smith expressed gratitude for the experience, said, “I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all. I’ve said it before but it’s worth mentioning again…this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew an actor could hope to work with.” He continued, “Thanks for letting Red and Kitty, their grandkid, all their grandkids’ friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show, and all of our wonderful guest cast members entertain you for two seasons. To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses…we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school.”
Set in 1995, That ’90s Show follows the adventures of Eric and Donna’s daughter, played by Callie Haverda, as she spends her summer with her grandparents and forms new friendships in Point Place. The main cast also includes Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Jay (Mace Coronel), Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), Ozzie (Reyn Doi), and Nikki (Sam Morelos), with guest appearances in Season 2 from Seth Green, Will Forte, Kevin Smith, and Matt Rife.
