Mubi has secured distribution rights to Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated film Queer in several territories, marking a significant deal with Fremantle. The agreement includes the UK, Ireland, Canada, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, Turkey, and India, along with all rights except theatrical in Italy. The transaction was facilitated by The Veterans, who brokered the deal for the arthouse streaming platform.
This acquisition follows the film’s world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and its North American debut in Toronto. In August, it was announced that A24 had obtained the US rights to Queer, which is based on the novel by William S. Burroughs. While Mubi has yet to reveal specific release plans, the film is scheduled for its US premiere as part of the Spotlight Gala at the New York Film Festival, along with a special presentation at the BFI London Film Festival in the UK.
Set in 1950, Queer tells the story of William Lee, played by Craig, an American expatriate living in Mexico City who leads a mostly solitary life, occasionally interacting with a small community of fellow Americans. His life takes a turn when he meets Eugene Allerton, a newcomer and former soldier, who introduces him to the possibility of forming a meaningful connection for the first time.
The film features music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, editing by Marco Costa, and costume design by J.W. Anderson, all of whom contributed to the tennis-themed drama Challengers. The film is produced by Fremantle, Fremantle North America, and Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle-owned The Apartment, alongside Luca Guadagnino for his production company, Frenesy Film Company, in partnership with Cinecittà and Frame by Frame.
