In an exciting blend of two Philadelphia-based fan favorites, Variety confirmed that Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are gearing up for a crossover episode. The news, which was first hinted in cryptic social media posts from Quinta Brunson and Rob McElhenney, is now official.
McElhenney shared the announcement on social media, posting a photo featuring him, Sunny co-star Charlie Day, and Brunson standing together outside the Warner Bros. lot, where Abbott Elementary is filmed. In another Instagram story, McElhenney added Sunny’s Danny DeVito alongside Abbott’s Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis, further fueling anticipation.
While, the idea of crossover episode had been circulating for a while, after McElhenney teased earlier this year that it would make sense, since both shows are set in Philadelphia. Though Abbott Elementary is produced by Warner Bros. TV and airs on ABC, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an FX network staple, both fall under Disney’s broader umbrella, making this collaboration feasible.
While Brunson initially played coy about the possibility, she dropped hints earlier this year. Speaking to Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, she revealed that a significant crossover was in the works, said, “Deals are made. I want you guys to know that. I’ll say I’m really excited for it… And I’m excited for this crossover of which I will not name with the other project.”
Brunson further added, “I love TV moments, and I miss those big TV moments. I remember how exciting they were. Anything I can do with Abbott to help keep that culture alive of fun TV, I will do. So I think this is going to be fun TV.”
Abbott Elementary is set to return for its fourth season on 9th October at 9:30 pm on ABC, while It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is gearing up to shoot Season 17 later this fall.
