Brie Larson, best known for her performances in Room and Captain Marvel, is set to make her West End debut next year. The Academy Award-winning actor will take on the lead role in a new revival of Elektra, the timeless tragedy by Sophocles, at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre. Performances begin on 24 January 2025.
Directed by acclaimed visionary Daniel Fish, who is known for his bold reinterpretations of classic works such as Oklahoma!, the production promises to bring a fresh perspective to the ancient tale. Fish’s previous work on Oklahoma! earned significant praise, winning Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Ali Stroker in 2019.
The new translation of Elektra is done by renowned poet Anne Carson, whose accolades include the MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant and Guggenheim Fellowship. Carson, and has been celebrated for her innovative works such as Autobiography of Red. She brings a contemporary edge to the Greek text, marking her third take on Sophocles’ Elektra following her earlier translations in 2001 and 2009.
The play recounts the harrowing tale of a woman grappling with the aftermath of her father’s murder, as her brother returns with a plan for vengeance. This revival will be the first major production of Elektra in over a decade, breathing new life into one of the most enduring tragedies of the ancient world.
The production will have a brief run at Theatre Royal Brighton from 13-18 January 2025, before moving to London for an 11-week limited engagement. Fans of Brie Larson and classical drama alike are eagerly awaiting what is sure to be a gripping theatrical experience.
