The much-anticipated drama series Mr Loverman, based on Bernardine Evaristo’s best-selling novel, is now available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from today, 14th October, 2024. The eight-part series, produced by Fable Pictures in collaboration with the BBC, promises to bring a fresh and vibrant portrayal of Britain’s older Caribbean community to the screen.
The new drama follows the life of 74-year-old Barrington Jedidiah Walker, a charismatic Antiguan-born resident of Hackney, played by Lennie James. Known for his retro suits and exuberant personality, Barry, as his friends call him, has been hiding a secret love affair with his best friend Morris, portrayed by Ariyon Bakare, for decades. Meanwhile, his wife of fifty years, Carmel, played by three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D Clarke, suspects Barry of infidelity with other women, unaware of the true nature of his double life.
As Barry faces the twilight of his years, he is forced to confront decisions that will alter his family’s future and his own understanding of himself. “Mr Loverman” offers a life-affirming and emotional exploration of love, family, and identity, making it a poignant addition to the BBC’s autumn lineup.
The series also stars Tamara Lawrance and Sharlene Whyte as Barrington and Carmel’s daughters, Maxine and Donna, while Tahj Miles plays Daniel, their grandson. The show’s other cast includes Suzette Llewellyn, Llewella Gideon and Clint Dyer.
Adapted by Nathaniel Price and directed by Hong Khaou, Mr Loverman promises to deliver both humor and heart. The show’s executive producers are Faye Ward and Hannah Farrell, who have worked alongside Nathaniel Price and Lennie James. “Bringing to life Bernardine Evaristo’s ground-breaking exploration of Britain’s older Caribbean community, Mr Loverman is a life-affirming story about family, love, and being true to yourself,” the BBC stated.
The series is produced by Irma Inniss, and executive produced by Jo McClellan for the BBC, with international distribution managed by Sony Pictures Television.
