Netflix has assembled a stellar cast for its upcoming faith-based film R&B, a contemporary adaptation of the biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz. The lead cast include Serayah, Tyler Lepley, and the legendary Phylicia Rashad.

The film, directed by Alanna Brown will be the first project to come out of Netflix’s recent creative partnership with DeVon Franklin and Tyler Perry Studios, which was established to produce faith-driven films. Franklin, known for projects like Flamin’ Hot and Miracles From Heaven, will team up with Perry for this release.

Set in Tennessee, R&B follows the journey of a young woman who leaves behind the Atlanta music scene to care for a widowed elderly woman. In the process, she finds not only the love of her life but also a mother figure she never had. The modern-day reimagining of the ancient love story aims to blend heartfelt romance with themes of faith, resilience, and self-discovery.

The script, written by Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan, draws inspiration from the biblical characters of Ruth and Boaz, highlighting the transformative power of love and devotion.

Joining the lead cast are Walnette Santiago, Nijah Brenea, and James Lee Thomas. Music talents including Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, and Lecrae Moore, are also part of the project.

Franklin and Perry’s collaboration with Netflix began under a multi-year, multi-picture first-look deal inked earlier this year, a move that has brought faith-based storytelling into the spotlight. “This partnership with Netflix allows us to share inspiring stories that uplift and resonate with audiences everywhere,” said Franklin. R&B is expected to be the first of many productions to emerge from this collaboration, as Perry continues to expand his creative universe at Netflix.

Perry’s upcoming Netflix projects also include Six Triple Eight and Beauty in Black, showcasing the filmmaker’s continued commitment to diverse and impactful storytelling.
