Krypto the Superdog is officially joining the DC Universe’s live-action slate, as confirmed by director James Gunn. Gunn revealed the news on social media, celebrating October’s Adopt a Shelter Dog month with the exciting announcement.
“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” Gunn wrote, adding a personal connection to the beloved superdog. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.”
Gunn continued, “What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
This will mark Krypto’s first live-action appearance, though the iconic canine has appeared in animated versions of DC films and series. Most recently, Dwayne Johnson voiced Krypto in the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets (2022).
In Gunn’s Superman reboot, David Corenswet will step into the role of Superman, with Krypto by his side. The superdog will also appear alongside Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie, set for a June 2026 release.
Krypto first debuted in the DC Comics universe in a 1955 issue of Superboy and has become known for his white fur, gold collar, and red cape.
