Banijay Iberia has expanded ventures into sports content by launching Banijay Iberia Sports, a new division dedicated to developing and producing original sports-related programming, according to Variety exclusive report. Led by newly appointed Director Gonzalo Miró, a well-known figure in Spanish TV and radio, the new unit will focus on creating a variety of content, including sportainment, documentaries, and digital projects. The announcement was made during Mipcom on Monday.
This move is part of Banijay Iberia’s broader strategy to tap into the growing demand for sports content, following the introduction of Banijay Sport last year and the creation of LaLiga Studios, a joint venture with Spain’s top soccer competition. The new sports division is seen as a key step in strengthening Banijay’s foothold in the world of sports entertainment.
“It is an honor to be part of Banijay Iberia, a company responsible for great audiovisual successes and at the forefront of innovation and creativity,” said Miró. “I am embarking on this brilliant challenge with great enthusiasm and with the aim of boosting the company’s position as a leader in sports content. In doing so, I’m confident we can attract new talent and pave the way for more sport-centric, original stories to make their way onto screens.”
Gonzalo Miró’s journey into the audiovisual world began with apprenticeships on acclaimed short films, followed by film studies in New York. Since then, he has made his mark across various Spanish media platforms, including appearances on Deportes COPE, Radio Marca, and “Celebrity Master Chef.”
Pilar Blasco, CEO of Banijay Iberia, expressed her excitement about the new division, said, “Banijay Iberia’s move into the sports area began in 2023 with the creation of LaLiga Studios. Today, complementing Banijay Entertainment’s wider global sports drive, we strengthen our commitment to diversifying our offering in this way, capitalizing on market opportunity and demand via the birth of Banijay Iberia Sports, a new division led by Gonzalo Miró.”
