Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber have secured The Girl in the Lake, an adult mystery thriller novel proposal by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver. Oliver, best known for her young adult works, will write the screenplay for a film adaptation under the United Artists banner, with Scarlett Johansson eyeing the lead role, according to Deadline exclusive report.
According to the report, although the plot details are being closely guarded, industry insiders have compared the upcoming film to What Lies Beneath and The Sixth Sense, setting expectations for a high-stakes, psychological thriller. The acquisition of The Girl in the Lake follows a competitive auction, with a separate publishing deal for the novel expected soon.
The project reunites Johansson and Stuber, who previously collaborated on Marriage Story and In Good Company. Johansson will also serve as a producer alongside Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, with Jonathan Lia through These Pictures, and Marc Resteghini through Jack Tar Pictures. Resteghini, who worked on Oliver’s Panic series at Amazon Studios, will also act as an executive producer.
This film marks Oliver’s leap into adult fiction after a successful career in young adult literature, which includes Panic and the Delirium trilogy. Oliver’s Before I Fall was previously adapted into a 2017 film, while Panic was turned into an Amazon Studios series.
Stuber, known for his role in reviving the United Artists label under Amazon MGM, has been working on several high-profile projects, including Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein for Netflix and Deliver Me From Nowhere, starring The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen.
