Picture Tree International (PTI) has taken on the role of international sales agent for The Stolen Child, an upcoming fantasy epic directed by Sebastian McKinnon, reported Variety. The film, currently in production, is based on McKinnon’s critically acclaimed short film trilogy Kin Fables.
Set in a war-torn Human Kingdom, the story follows a daring poet who embarks on a perilous quest with three mystical heroes. Their mission: to venture deep into the Faerie State, locate a lost prince, and restore peace by returning him to the throne.
Filming is underway in British Columbia, with production set to continue in Iceland and France in early 2025. The highly anticipated fantasy adventure is slated for release in 2026, with Immina Films handling distribution in Canada.
McKinnon, who is also known as an artist for the renowned trading card game Magic: The Gathering, marks his directorial debut with The Stolen Child. It’s the first time an artist from the game has transitioned into directing a feature-length film. McKinnon will also compose the original soundtrack under his music alias Clann, alongside his long-time collaborators.
Reflecting on the project, McKinnon said, “It is an immense privilege to make this film — a journey 12 years in the making, now becoming reality thanks to the support of my fans, and my artistic and producing partners. My aim is to make a gem of a fantasy film that will resonate with a global audience, offering something beautiful, daring, and unseen.”
The film’s cast includes Stephen McHattie, Jason James Richter, and Teddy Van Ee. The production team also boasts an impressive crew, with Kristof Brandl serving as director of photography, and Justin Lachance handling editing duties.
Catherine Boily from Metafilms and Tara Cowell-Plain of Cowpi Media are producing The Stolen Child. The executive producing team includes Sylvain Corbeil (Metafilms), Lee Broda (LB Entertainment), Francis Cucuzella and Stephen Robusto from House of Youth, Carl Francesco, and Joel Martinez.
Alongside The Stolen Child, Picture Tree International’s lineup for the American Film Market (AFM) includes a broad array of films across multiple genres. Standouts include the historical dramas Raptures and Frieda’s Case, the supernatural crime thriller The Osha Rule, and the Icelandic black comedy Divine Remedy. The AFM slate also features the fantasy blockbuster Chantal and the Magic Kingdom, bittersweet comedies like The Mystery of Love and Butterflies, and coming-of-age dramas Vena and A Quiet Resilience.
With such a rich offering of films, PTI’s presence at AFM highlights its continued commitment to bringing diverse and engaging cinema to the global market.
