Andra Day, acclaimed for her portrayal of Billie Holiday, has officially joined the Season 2 cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, taking on the role of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Athena plays a pivotal role in Rick Riordan’s beloved series as the mother of Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson’s close friend and fellow demigod, portrayed by Leah Sava Jeffries.

Day’s casting was revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo in Brazil, where she addressed fans in a video message. Known for her Golden Globe-winning performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, the actress and Grammy-winning R&B singer has an impressive list of recent credits, including lead roles in Exhibiting Forgiveness and The Deliverance, the latter directed by Lee Daniels.

Season 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians introduced audiences to Percy, a young demigod adjusting to his supernatural powers and setting out on a journey across America with friends Annabeth and Grover to prevent a war among the gods. According to the official logline, Season 2 will see Percy “return to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.”
