Mattel is under fire after a packaging error on its newly released “Wicked” dolls inadvertently directed buyers to an adult website rather than the official movie page for the upcoming Wicked film, based on the hit musical. The limited-edition dolls, which feature Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, mistakenly list “Wicked.com” on the box—a URL leading to a site requiring users to be over 18 to access. The film’s website is, in fact, WickedMovie.com.
The packaging oversight on the Wicked dolls, a collaboration between Mattel and Universal Pictures, has sparked significant backlash from fans online. Following the film’s Los Angeles premiere, social media posts circulated with images of the packaging error, as fans expressed shock and disappointment.
“Hey @Mattel whoever is responsible for your marketing/packaging for the new official Wicked dolls have made a HUGE mistake,” wrote one user on X. “The wicked.com on your packaging takes you to a porn site!”
Another frustrated fan added, “Whoever did this needs to be fired immediately cuz why would they do that knowing that it’s mostly kids buying these dolls.”
The adult website, Wicked.com, is affiliated with Wicked Pictures, a California-based production company specializing in parody adult films. The company, which has produced titles such as Black Widow XXX and Captain Marvel XXX, describes its content as “quality cinematic content” since its founding in 1993.
Mattel issued a statement acknowledging the error after the issue began to gain attention on social media. “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel ‘Wicked’ collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” the company said to Variety. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information,” it added.
The dolls are being sold at major retailers, including Target, Amazon, and Kohl’s, where they have been highly anticipated by fans of Wicked.
