Universal Television is developing a new iteration of the iconic high school football drama Friday Night Lights series with its original creative team—Jason Katims, Pete Berg, and Brian Grazer—on board.
Unlike the previous show, which starred Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, and Jesse Plemons, this reboot will center around new characters and storylines while staying rooted in the world of high school football.
Based on H.G. Bissinger’s book and the 2004 film of the same name, the original Friday Night Lights premiered on NBC in 2006. Set in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas, the series explored the lives of a high school football team and their community. The show ran for five critically acclaimed seasons, gaining a dedicated fanbase.
The original series also featured standout performances from Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Jurnee Smollett, Michael B. Jordan, and Matt Lauria. Produced by Universal Television, Imagine Television, and Film 44, the series transitioned to DirecTV’s The 101 Network for its final three seasons after the 2007 writers’ strike.
The project’s creators remain tight-lipped on plot details, but its roots in the world of high school football ensure it will resonate with longtime fans and newcomers alike.
