After earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of legendary opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria, Angelina Jolie is set to return to Paris for her next major role, according to Variety exclusive report. The Hollywood icon will star in Stitches (Coutures), the first English-language film by celebrated French director Alice Winocour.

Set against the glamorous backdrop of Paris Fashion Week, Stitches delves into the intersecting lives of three women, with Jolie portraying a filmmaker. The project is slated to begin filming early next year, blending French and English dialogue to reflect the international allure of its story.

The film will be produced by Charles Gillibert’s Paris-based CG Cinema, in partnership with Zhang Xin and William Horberg of Closer Media. Pathé Films, a key player in French cinema, will distribute the movie in France, continuing their collaboration with Winocour after her critically acclaimed Paris Memories. That film earned lead actress Virginie Efira a César Award for her performance as a survivor of a terrorist attack and solidified Winocour’s reputation as a director capable of capturing deeply emotional narratives.

UTA Independent Film Group has structured the financing for Stitches, while Hanway Films will oversee international sales.

Winocour’s previous work includes Proxima, a bilingual drama about an astronaut, played by Eva Green, who struggles with guilt and isolation as she prepares for a year-long mission in space. The film garnered awards at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals and earned Green a César nomination. With Stitches, Winocour is expected to bring her nuanced storytelling to the high-pressure world of fashion, offering a fresh perspective on the industry’s intricate dynamics.

Jolie’s return to Paris marks another major milestone following her turn as Maria Callas in Maria. The film, which reimagines the Greek opera singer’s final days in the 1970s, premiered at the Venice Film Festival to an eight-minute standing ovation. Her performance has reignited awards buzz, positioning her as a contender in the Best Actress race for the first time in 15 years.
