BAFTA winner Emma Mackey, known for her standout performances in Barbie and Sex Education, is set to star alongside Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in an untitled mystery movie directed by J.J. Abrams. The film, produced under Warner Bros and Abrams’ Bad Robot banner, is shrouded in secrecy, with details about Mackey’s role and the plot tightly under wraps.
Despite speculation, sources confirm the project is not a time-travel film. Abrams, who has crafted the script, will direct the movie, continuing his successful collaboration with Warner Bros. This marks his return to the director’s chair since Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Emma Mackey’s star power has been on a steady ascent. She earned the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2023 and was recently seen in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-winning hit Barbie. Prior to this, she portrayed literary icon Emily Brontë in Emily, a Warner Bros drama by Frances O’Connor.
Mackey first gained recognition as Maeve Wiley in Netflix’s acclaimed series Sex Education. Her filmography also includes Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile. Among her upcoming projects are Hot Milk, a mother-daughter drama directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, and Ella McCay, where she takes the titular role in James L. Brooks’ latest film for 20th Century Studios.
J.J. Abrams continues to expand his creative portfolio under the Bad Robot production banner. The company recently produced the Amazon MGM documentary The Blue Angels and is set to release Flowervale Street by David Robert Mitchell and the drama series Duster for Max. Over the summer, Bad Robot entered negotiations to renew its longstanding film and TV deal with Warner Bros.
Warner Bros itself has been on a roll, securing high-profile projects like Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation and launching development for a Game of Thrones movie. The studio’s upcoming releases include The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, set to hit theaters on 13 December.
