The world premiere of Midnight Cowboy – A New Musical has been officially announced, bringing a fresh adaptation of James Leo Herlihy’s iconic novel and the Oscar-winning 1969 film to the stage.
The musical tells the compelling story of Joe Buck, a young man fleeing his troubled past in search of a brighter future in New York City. Along the way, he meets Rico “Ratso” Riz zo, a fellow drifter. Together, the unlikely duo navigate the unforgiving urban landscape, confronting the brutal realities of survival and the fragile nature of dreams.
With a book by Tony-nominated playwright Bryony Lavery (Frozen), the show also features a score by Francis “Eg” White, a celebrated songwriter behind hits for Adele, Sam Smith, and Florence + The Machine.
Nick Winston will take the helm as director and choreographer, supported by an accomplished creative team. Charlie Ingles provides musical arrangements, orchestrations, and supervision, while Andrew Exeter leads set and lighting design. Other key contributors include Sophia Pardon (costume design), Yvonne Gilbert (sound design), and Ellie Verkerk (musical direction).
The production will also benefit from associate director and choreographer Libby Watts, intimacy director Lucy Fennell, and dialect coach Mary Howland.
Midnight Cowboy – A New Musical is slated to run at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 4 April to 17 May, 2025. Casting details will be announced in the coming months, though the production has yet to disclose a casting director.
Adapting the grit and poignancy of the novel and film into a musical format, the team behind Midnight Cowboy aims to deliver a fresh and resonant take on this timeless tale of resilience and friendship in the face of adversity.
