The long-awaited adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude will premiere on Netflix on 11 December. Directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López, the series marks one of the most ambitious productions in Latin American history, bringing to life the beloved literary classic in an eight-episode first part.

The series, which was entirely filmed in Colombia, has the full support of the Nobel laureate’s family. It captures the essence of the novel, showcasing the founding of the mythical town of Macondo, the arrival of the enigmatic Melquíades, the complexities of family life, the passions of its inhabitants, and the political upheavals that lead to war. Iconic moments, such as José Arcadio Buendía’s prophecy of solitude beneath the chestnut tree and the magical rain of yellow flowers, are set to mesmerize fans of the book.

The Colombian cast includes Marco Antonio González and Diego Vásquez as the young and adult José Arcadio Buendía, Susana Morales and Marleyda Soto as young and adult Úrsula Iguarán, Moreno Borja as Melquíades, and Claudio Cataño as Aureliano Buendía. Other notable cast members include Viña Machado as Pilar Ternera, Ruggero Pasquarelli as Pietro Crespi, and Salvador del Solar as General Moncada, among many others, who bring the Buendía family and the town’s colorful characters to life.

Behind the camera, the production is a collaboration of top-tier talent. Directors Alex García López and Laura Mora split episodes between them, with a script penned by José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, and Albatros González, alongside script consultant Maria Camila Arias. The series boasts a creative team that includes cinematographers Paulo Pérez and María Sarasvati, production designers Bárbara Enríquez and Eugenio Caballero, and costume designer Catherine Rodríguez.

First published in 1967, One Hundred Years of Solitude is considered one of the most significant works of Spanish-American literature. Chronicling the Buendía family’s multi-generational saga, it captures the magical and tragic essence of Macondo, a town marked by love, madness, war, and an inescapable curse of solitude. The novel has sold over 50 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 40 languages, solidifying its place as a literary masterpiece.
