Storm Conall, the third named storm of the autumn, has wreaked havoc across the UK, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds that have disrupted transportation and raised flood risks in several regions.

Southern England bore the brunt of the storm on Wednesday, with up to 40mm of rain reported overnight and further downpours expected throughout the day. The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for London, Essex, Kent, Surrey, and West Sussex, cautioning against delays on roads and possible power outages.

While the Met Office did not officially name the storm, the Dutch forecaster KNMI dubbed it Conall due to its anticipated impact on the Netherlands.

In southern England, train services faced significant disruptions. Routes between Ascot in Berkshire and Aldershot in Hampshire were suspended, while part of a line on the Isle of Wight was blocked. Train networks including Thameslink, Gatwick Express, and Southern also experienced delays and cancellations.

The aftermath of last weekend’s Storm Bert compounded issues farther west, with train disruptions continuing between Hereford and Newport in south Wales and across the south Wales valleys.

Flood warnings remained a critical concern, with almost 100 alerts in place across England and Wales. A severe flood warning – indicating danger to life – was issued for the River Nene at Billing Aquadrome in Northamptonshire.

“The situation on the Nene remains hazardous,” the Environment Agency stated. “There is danger to life. Keep yourself and your family safe. Severe flooding is expected to continue. Please stay evacuated from the area.”

Storm Bert, which preceded Conall, left over 500 homes and businesses in England and Wales flooded, with winds exceeding 80mph turning roads into rivers. The lingering impact of both storms has underscored the challenging weather conditions gripping the region this autumn.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain cautious and follow official guidance as recovery efforts continue.
