UNICEF Türkiye has announced a new collaboration with Zehra Gunes, a national volleyball star and VakifBank Women’s Volleyball Team member, to promote children’s rights and welfare. The partnership was formalized at a ceremony at Feriye, attended by Gunes, UNICEF Türkiye Representative Paolo Marchi, and VakifBank Sports Club Vice President Ferkan Merdan.
Expressing her excitement, Zehra Gunes called the collaboration a meaningful milestone in her career. “This partnership with UNICEF, an organization dedicated to protecting children and their rights, is a major step,” she said.
Gunes highlighted her desire to create a better world for children, particularly emphasizing the importance of empowering girls. She believes that “strong tomorrows” begin with providing equal opportunities for girls to succeed. “Every girl should be given the opportunity to succeed,” she affirmed, vowing to shine a light on their paths.
Advocating for gender equality, Gunes spoke passionately about her commitment to ensuring boys and girls have the same opportunities. She pointed out that even small efforts can significantly impact children, especially young girls who need motivation and support.
Sharing a personal anecdote, she recalled the joy of teaching volleyball to young girls, noting the pride on their faces as they learned something new. “Children’s pure love and sincerity have always motivated me,” she said, emphasizing her dedication to nurturing this love.
UNICEF Türkiye’s Representative Paolo Marchi praised Gunes for her dedication both on and off the court. “She is a champion for children,” he said, underscoring her role as an inspiring figure for youth across the country.
Marchi explained the partnership’s focus on addressing the needs of children in vulnerable situations, particularly in Türkiye. He expressed confidence that Gunes’ influence would amplify public awareness of children’s rights. “Together, we aim to inspire hope and draw attention to critical issues,” he added.
The event also shed light on UNICEF’s ongoing efforts in conflict zones, including Sudan and Palestine. Marchi emphasized the devastating impact of crises on children and reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to aiding those most affected.
“UNICEF has been working relentlessly to negotiate a cease-fire and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza,” he said, noting the organization’s on-ground presence in such regions.
This partnership between Zehra Gunes and UNICEF Türkiye signifies a unified effort to ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy their rights and reach their full potential. With Gunes’ influence and UNICEF’s mission, the collaboration aims to bring hope, equality, and opportunities to children in Türkiye and beyond.
